Guardian value-added measure for university teaching
First, new students are grouped into four bands, each representing a different level of entry qualifications.
Band 1: A-level (and Scottish Higher)
entrants with 21-30 points
Band 2: A-level entrants with 11-20 points
Band 3: A-level entrants with 1-10 points
Band 4: alternative entry qualifications,
including level 3 GNVQs and NVQs, BTECs and access courses.
(An A grade at A level is worth 10 points, B grade 8 points, C grade 6 points etc. An A in a Scottish Higher is worth 6 points)
For each band a proportion of those graduates obtaining a upper second or first class degree is calculated. Each band is then weighted.
Band 1 is given a weighting of 1
Band 2 is given a weighting of 2
Band 3 is given a weighting of 3
Band 4 is given a weighting of 4
The 'scores' for each band, found by multiplying its weighting by the proportion of graduates, are then summed to obtain a final overall score for a department.
