The mental arithmetic practice - rounding up and down and sums - at this US site is basic but compelling. An animated basketball player celebrates a correct answer.

BBC Bitesize
A suite of interactive games to help with numeracy at Key Stage 1.

Count On
A useful site for both teachers and students. The teachers' index breaks down the resources by year group. Suitable for Year 1 to Year 7 students.

Maths MagNet
An online maths magazine for 4-7 year olds, MagNet uses colouring by numbers, bugs and a space hopscotch game to practise counting, odd and even numbers and multiplication. Highly entertaining.

MathsNet: Numeracy
Part of the MathsNet site which would be particularly useful for teachers or adults learning with children. This fun site aimed at those learning to count contains simple interactive number games that will spice up numeracy learning.

MathSphere: Resources for Parents and Teachers
Do you want to help your child with mathematics? Do you teach mathematics? If so, this is the site for you. MathSphere contains mathematics worksheets for children and a mathematics site for teachers and parents to download practice worksheets and tests to improve children's achievement. Includes competitions, children's pages and children's contributions as well.

Maths Year 2000 Numberland
Click on a number between one and 99 to go to a page featuring poems and facts about each one. See the /explorer page for a mathematical dictionary, origami instructions and easy explanations of topics such as fractions, sliceform models and pi.

Numeracy Software
Richard English of Hull University, who nominated this site, says it is an excellent one for teachers and trainees: "Lots of free numeracy resources to download plus numeracy news and numeracy links. My Primary PGCE students have found it very useful."

Primary Resources
An excellent site, with numeracy games for students between the ages of four and 11 to use at home. Parents can check which part of the curriculum each game covers and children will enjoy these fun activities.

Teaching Ideas
Contains power point presentations, worksheets and lesson ideas for primary school teachers. Resources are broken down into individual topics such as problem solving, shapes and number patterns.

The Standards Site (numeracy)
Produced by the Department for Children, Schools and Families , this site contains primary school teaching resources to bring numeracy alive, such as sorting two-dimensional shapes on an interactive whiteboard. The rest of the site has resources for other areas of the primary national strategy, such as literacy, and provides advice on professional development.
